The Bad
* Not Open Source.
* Uses XTEA encryption - not the most secure out there.
* When encrypting, passwords you enter are not hidden by default.
* The original source file is not deleted by default.
* You can't add a 'protected' suffix.
* When extracting file contents, the passwords you enter are not hidden by default.

This is a repeat of the April 17, 2007, giveaway, reviewed by BladedThoth. I just don't see the point. You can use the open-source AxCrypt which has much greater security, handles folder as well as file encryption, also automatically re-encrypts, has secure password input, supports key files (and can be combined with password), has automatic secure erase, automatic compression, etc. True, it doesn't generate self-decrypting executables, but there's a standalone viewer (doesn't encrypt) available. If you want something more portable, there's the open-source 7-Zip, although it doesn't have secure-erase or automatic re-encryption.
I am still using TrueCrypt,it is free and open-source,really good.
Updating my previous comment (in moderation), 7-Zip will automatically re-encrypt if you open an encrypted archive (self-extracting or not) and view within 7-Zip (installed) without extracting (executing self-extracting archives obviously extracts).
Keep in mind, if you're running Vista, XP, or 2000, there's at least one "Encrypt" function built into the OS, (and so is "bug-free", as well as "free");
(I haven't fired up my Win98 machine in so long, I don't remember if it's in there as well; I think you need NTFS to really use it with any effectiveness, but check your Windows Help files to be sure, since if you're running a version that supports it, it's a "guaranteed to work" solution, since it's part of the OS, no matter which version you're using);
If you can't find anything in your Windows (built-in) Help files on the subject of encrypting individual files, look for the instructions on making an Encrypted Folder to put your file into, & there's always the Microsoft on-line help system too;
The encrypted folder is usually in a different color & has a different appearance then the default "regular" folder icon, (this is also done by default when a folder is Encrypted).
If you use Windows "built-in" Folder Encryption, you may want to change the icon that the Encrypted folder uses, back to the "standard" folder icon, to "hide it" a little better;
Just use the "Change Icon" button when you right-click the folder & then click "Properties", where you should see the options to change the icon.
Just thought I'd pass that "reminder" along, to those who don't "go digging" into Windows much, (and who never got the 4"-thick Manuals, SDK, & DDK books which those who write the code for drivers & apps for Windows need, for each version of Windows, and that are expensive!)

Salve per proteggere i file privati uso AXCrypt e' gratuito e mi trovo bene non so se' fa le stesse cose del soft offerto oggi ma dalla descrizione penso di si.

Despite the current low (and once again misleading) USER RATING I give this GAOTD a THUMB UP with some reservations though.
Of course it is not OPEN SOURCE and does not use the most secure and accurate encryption algorythm, but in my humble view it's simple and easy to use, perfect for HOME USERS and IT illiterate like you who just needs basic encryption...LOL!!
For SPECIAL ONES like the undersigned TRUECRYPT is definetely a better and more comprehensive option.

Per incominciare dovevi specificare quale versione del browser E utilizzi ma non dovrebbe fare molta diferenza.
Ci sono molti aspetti su cui ti devi basare se qualcosa non va come dovrebbe. Per prima cosa il Pc deve essere aggiornato con tutte le rispettive applicazioni e per secondo controllare con una bella scansione il PC con un buon antivirus se, forse, il computer è infetta da qualche virus e/o spyware. Prese in esame queste considerazioni recati a questo indirizzo http://www.java.com/it/download/manual.jsp
e procedi manualmente. Chiaramente, prima, devi disinstallare il tuo java installato precedentemente e riprovare. Le cause del suo malfunzionamento possono essere molteplici come ad esempio una installazione non andato a buon fine. Ultima cosa: dovevi specificare anche, quale versione di Vista utilizzi. Ultimo aspetto da non sottovalutare per il tuo mal funzionamento potrebbero esserci applicazioni che vanno inconflitto con java.

Salve a tutti! Espongo qui il mio problema anche se so che questo non è il posto esatto.
Ho un problema che mi assilla da parecchio tempo: ho installato regolarmente Java scaricandolo dal sito e lo posso verificare perchè dal pannello di controllo di Vista compare la relativa icona. Il problema nasce quando navigando incontri un sito dove ti comunica che il tuo browser è senza il supporto Java. Allora clicchi per installare il il plugin, dai l'ok per consentire, ma a quel punto mi compare una scritta: programma di installazione componenti aggiuntivi...Il software è stato bloccato. Impossibile verificarne l'autore. Do l'ok e chiudo, ma non mi fermo: vado ai componenti aggiuntivi di internet explorer e Java risulta attivato. Allora torno al pennello di controllo di Vista e apro Java alla pagina: " Avanzate/Java predefinito per browser" per spuntare la casellina relativa a InternetExplorer, ma la stessa risulta bloccata e quindi non si può attivare. Ho provato ad installare il programma anche disattivando Firewal e l'antivirus AVG, ma la cosa non cambia.
C'è qualcuno che mi può aiutare? Grazie

Si consiglio anch'io i sw free, cmq il programma distribuito:
non si integra in explore, quindi niente cript con tasto dx ma dovete eseguire il programma;
esiste solo in lingua inglese, nessuna altra lingua (anche se in realta anche un cretino come me riuscire ad usarlo);
ci mette parecchio a criptare anche file piccolini;
le password al momento dell inserimento sono in chiaro(occhio a chi vi spia da sopra la spalla);
aprendo l'eseguibile non estrae il file ma lancia il programma ad associato all'estensione e gli passa il file come con paramentro (se non è un file riconosciuto da win combina nulla);
per estrarre il file dovete necessariamente ripassare per il prg, quindi se è scaduta la licenza o che ... siete fregati;
Dire quindi un programma ... beh, vedete voi, per me non vale la candela
