Oddly we used to get regular suggestions to make a giveaway portable... well ZD Soft has already... and todays giveaway license works with the portable edition too.
Also this giveaway has the ability to work on systems with broken video subsystems! My old faithful Vista laptop with 3TB of storage space and thousands of programs installed many hundreds of which are past giveaways... is one of those HP laptops with a failed Nvida video GPU that just does not work reliably at designed resolution and will not function any more with any Nvida accelerated driver due to chip failures so I use it via remote desktop which does not use the generic VGA driver to render the screens. Well this does not demand hardware accelerated DirectX/Direct3D drivers to operate! I was able to define an area and start a capture and it worked! It also accepted the registration data provided and lets you put any name you like in the registration Name field.
But it did not capture any audio sources on that laptop, not the built in connexant HDA chip or an external USB sound device.
It did capture audio on my Win10 laptop but the first time it did it with some weird sampling transformation of the mic recording causing the captured mic speech to be played back over an octave below the original pitches but the machines captured sounds were ok... I was unable to reproduce the bug after changing the Advanced sample rates and depths so cannot narrow down what caused that effect.
For me it shows promise but more work needs to be done in several areas before it earns a thumbs up from me... but it does not earn a thumbs down either as it is not TOO buggy or unstable... It's a bit buggy and a bit unstable that is all.
Additionally the portable edition stores activation data in the local machines registry in a location that is hashed from the path it is executed from. The programs settings are also stored in a location sensative registry location tied to the ZD Soft Screen Recorder SDK too so it is not in any way portable from device to device other than you can move the USB stick but on every machine you will need to reactivate it at least the once and set the capture parameters and settings how you want them.
Portable mode needs to store all the activation data and capture preferences in a ini or xml configuration file stored on the portable editions execution folder and not on the current host machine as that currently means I am leaving the unencrypted registration data behind on every machine I plug this into and re-activate it on in the current users registry.
I would like the developer to publish openly a what's new history of this product too for future giveaways and make it so theeir SDK can have its root settings folder redirected to the current prducts settings folder either in registry or configuration file for the installed and portable editions respectively rather than needing a seperate SDK registry key for the capture settings as that is messy and could cause confusion and mess if other developers want to use the SDK in thier programs without having settings splattered around the registry.
