@boboskij:

If you don't have Microsoft Office then this is a great aternative for the Spreadsheet part of the office suite. We were given the full version of Kingsoft Office Suite Pro version back in January/February and I've not bothered transferring my copy of Microsoft Office from my old computer simply because apart from a few issues Kingsofts software is nearly as good.

The interface is very similar to Microsofts version as well.
I'll pass on this today though as I still have the Full Office suite from the previous giveaway. :)

Anything that is not fully compatible with Microsoft Office (from a small business/Medium business perspective)is just not worth using IMO. Sad but true, As MS Office is the standard worldwide, if you use something else that isn't totally compatible in nearly every way with your client's software then it's totally useless I have found (the hard way). If you just want it for your home computer account then that's fine. Just sayin ;-)

When you use the kingsoft office suite even the free one you wonder how microsoft can get away with charging so much for their offerings.

Hi,

Could somebody tell me what the exact differences are between this Kingsoft Spreadsheets "Standard" 2012 and the version included in Kingsoft Office Suite Free 2012, which I have been using for quite some time?

@ # 7, our good friend Giovanni (always among the best comments on GOTD ;-). Believe me, I've tried all the free available office suites (including the nice ones you suggest) and some paid ones as well (which was previously the case for Kingsoft), but none comes close to Kingsoft, at least as far as Writer is concerned, in terms of "look 'n feel". In most screens, you can speak of a real clone, at least of Word XP & 2003, to which it adds a tab facility, which to me is quite sufficient: I don't know of any seasoned Word user who benefits from the ribboned 2007/2010 ones; on the contrary, this ribbon thing, that might prove easier for a genuine new user, really does slow me down!).

It's also the most file compatible with Word files (I have quite a lot of rather big, complex files, I update on a regular basis), up to the styles feature, which I use extensively, the only gripes being that the styles are not displayed in the right order (and there I also do loose time), that you cannot select all text occurrences one style applies to, to perform batch modifications and that it sometimes adds a few of it's own. But nothing comparable with the hundreds of styles previous versions of OOo and even Libre Office would add (the latter seems to have done away with this in the latest version; I haven't checked the latest OOo on this) not to mention an often poor recognition of the used styles. I would suggest the latter two publishers to stop adding "great" features almost no one uses and concentrate on thorough file compatibility instead. Writer also offers good compatibility with the modifications follow-up feature in Word. Libre Office really can't handle this...

Kingsoft Writer is also often able to open Word files my Word/Vista combo more or less trashed (they wouldn't open any more). If Kingsoft Writer can't open them (little gripe: the send function to the publishers doesn't work on my system: Vista again?) it's usually hopeless, except that, in some cases, Libre Office do the job. In both programs the obtained files will be "repaired" and function normally in Word again. To that purpose, I save them as .wps or .odt files, close the program, reload the new files and then save them to .doc again.

My two other gripes with Kingsoft Writer are the fact that it does not recognize the few basic Word macro's I use and, worse, that I do need Dutch and French dictionaries for my work and only an English one is available. Us/British and even German dictionaries would also be an asset to me. Someone any suggestions about making Kingsoft accept the likes of the free Hunspell?

I'd love to get rid of my M$-Office altogether, which is prone to crash under Vista (this is probably engineered that way: I stopped sending those "reports", since the only suggestion would every time be in the form of "Why don't you buy something recent, you old wretch!". And although I use it extensively, on a daily basis, I still haven't explored all its possibilities (I only recently discovered a way to easily do away - in batch - of superfluous styles)... Why would I then pay for something "New" that, as said before, does furthermore slow me down in my work!

For basic text editing, nothing surpasses little Jarte (www.jarte.com/) for ease of use and speed, once you get used to their particular but very effective UI. And it's portable as well. I use it as a Notepad/Wordpad and even Word replacement (on texts with basic editing). And they have a nice amount of very good dictionaries available from scratch. Word's combined spell/grammar checker may still be superior, they do a better job on my poor old fingers (I only use two!) hitting the wrong (usually next) key or skipping one altogether. Word will usually suggest lots of awkward words but not the obvious ones... Pity development seems to have slowed down and their nice hovering over feature still looks like unfinished work. I'd also wish I could mark word groups, sentences, paragraphs for global editing...

@ # 12 I've also tested Softmaker's TextMaker extensively (and Ashampoo's as well): Kingsoft does a better job on all the compatibility issues I mentioned before.
@ # 14 Softmaker 2008 lags miles behind the free Kingsoft one.
@ # 15 If that cumbersome feature gets installed, just get rid of this Autostart feature through the likes of AnVir (was offered here and there is a free version available www.anvir.com/taskmanager/).
@ # 19 As nice and lean AbiWord may be, believe me, it doesn't do the job on the files I work with. To begin with, their styles feature may be nice on it's own, it is absolutely not compatible with Word's/Kingsoft's one and will recognize some and ignore others... And what abour the promised suite?

There may be some very nice suites or text makers around but, as someone noted before: Word being the de facto (business) standard, and although I hate this situation, nothing less than "perfect" compatibility will do...

Cheers from Belgium and Ciao Italia
